« I have made a minute sender among my papers in order to find out the date of the circumstance attende to leg you, as I recollected that Marchand had gone down to town and that there had been some communication thereapon from sir Thomas Reade to me, as the soldier who accompanied him had separated from him on his arrival in town, which at first, had led to a belief that he had proceeded down with out having been accompagnied, conceiving it possible therefore that Sir Th. Reade letters had not been detroyed by me, and knowing that it would ascertain the date (as it was to the only time Marchand ever had gone to town since has arrival at Longwood). I made a search and have been fortunate enough to find it. It was on the 21th June last. I do not think that Cipriani was present when the letter was delivered as it recollect night, Cipriani declined going down until the next day in consequence of supposing that it would be inconvenient for two persons each of whom had a different places, to go to, to divide one soldier who was to accompany them, between them, and I think likewise that he told me he was not present. I am afraid that I could not whithout giving cause for suspicion ask, at last at present Cipriani any more question about it. I will however take to find favorable opportunity of doing so should you think it absolutely necessary how that the date has been ascertained. It was Pieron who accompanied Marchand to town and not Cipriani. »
